At Lavender International, we decided it was about time you got to know some of our staff in a little bit more detail. Next up is our Outside Agency L3 Consultant and Trainer - Jonathan Lonsdale. Jonathan has been with Lavender since November 2023, and below he details what he loves about his role, what he finds more challenging, and more.

 

Q: Can you describe a typical workday for you as a L3 Consultant and Trainer?

A: I lead external audits, contribute to performance reviews by providing valuable insight, and develop clear, effective procedures that keep our operations running smoothly and safely.

Q: Where do you typically perform your role?

A: On site.

Q: What type of equipment do you use?

A: Mainly my laptop and pen.

Q: What skills are needed?

A: Time management and a deep well of NDT knowledge.

Q: How do you stay updated?

A: Conferences; Chatting to people; We live and breathe it everyday.

Q: How often do you work alone?

A: 50/50.

Q: What types of materials or structures do you most often test?

A: Aerospace; Oil and gas; General engineering.

Q: Which NDT methods do you use the most?

A: PT.

Q: What are some common challenges you face during your inspections?

A: Not wanting to share bad news with a customer.

Q: Who do you collaborate with most?

A: Technicians.

Q: What do you enjoy the most?

A: I find it especially rewarding to see the impact of my work reflected when a company shares strong results. It’s a reminder that quality, efficiency, and teamwork truly pay off.

Q: What do you find less enjoyable?

A: At the minute it’s trying to do my daily role alongside gaining additional qualifications. I’m currently working towards my L3 Magnetic PCN qualification.

Q: How do you handle unexpected issues or complications during testing?

A: I seek advice from the Outside Agency team. Between us we have a wealth of knowledge to tap into.

Q: Can you share an example of a challenging project and how you overcame it?

A: One standout project of mine involved investigating the root cause of an indication found during radiographic testing for Safran. Taking a proactive approach, I initiated a deeper analysis and even went on to conduct further research at university to support the investigation. The final report revealed a depletion of elements along the weld line – an insight that helped pinpoint the issue.

Q: How has your role as an NDT technician evolved since you started?

A: Over time I have gained significantly more responsibility going from an operator to a Level 3.

Q: Can you share a memorable moment or achievement from your career?

A: Finally getting my Level 3 was a huge achievement!! Having being promised at a couple of employers before I came to Lavenders. It is very much a right place right time scenario.
