This method consists of a sensitive radiographic film being placed under a specific component i.e. a weld or casting. The Component is then exposed to ionizing radiation either X-Radiation or Gamma Radiation.
This radiation will pass through the component and expose the film beneath it, leading to what is known as the latent image on the film. This image is not a permanent image and no noticeable change will be seen until development when it becomes a permanent fixed image. Discontinuities such as cracks or lack of fusion within the component can affect the exposure of the film.
Most materials can be tested by Radiographic inspection, e.g. Ferritic and non-ferritic materials and both welds, castings and often composites are viewed too. Radiographic testing provides a permanent record and provides a high sensitivity of testing.
Course Description
- PCN/ISO 9712 Levels 1, 2, and 3, and ASNT Level 3.
- Alternatively, we can provide training suitable for candidates working to an employer written practice based on SNT-TC-1A; EN4179 and NAS410.
- Radiography Testing is separated into two specific product sectors for certification purposes: Welds and Castings.
- Lavender International follows the BS EN ISO (PCN) 9712 – NDT Qualification and Certification of NDT Personnel Standard for its Level 3 programmes. Lavender International cannot provide ASNT NDT Level 3 exams but can provide advice on the exam and training in preparation for the exam and contact information for exam locations in the UK and worldwide.

An individual certified to Radiography Level 2 has demonstrated competence to perform NDT according to Radiography Testing procedures.
- Select the Radiography technique for the test method to be used
- Define the limitations of application of the testing method
- Translate NDT codes, standards, specifications and procedures into NDT instructions adapted to the actual working conditions
- Set up and verify equipment settings
- Perform and supervise tests
- Interpret and evaluate results according to applicable standards, codes, specifications or procedures
- Prepare Radiography written instructions
- Carry out and supervise all tasks at or below level 2
- Provide guidance for personnel at or below level 2
- Report the results of Radiography test

Course Suitability – Work Experience and Prerequisites
All personnel wishing to carry out Radiography should have a valid Basic Radiation Safety Certificate (please note this can be carried out as part of any level 2 RT course)
All students who wish to undertake main method Level 3 certification must hold a valid Basic exam (PCN) or equivalent ISO9712 acceptable certification.
Supervised work experience, can be obtained either before the examination, or within 24 months after passing the exam.
To progress from Level 2 to Level 3 requires a minimum amount of time spent as a Level 2. However, the time required varies from scheme to scheme and you are advised to review the appropriate scheme document when considering becoming a Level 3.
Issuing Certification
Once the training hours have been obtained, the examination passed, and supervised work experience obtained within 24 months of passing the exam, PCN will issue certification.
