Q: Can you describe a typical workday for you as an NDT technician?

A: My job varies quite a lot from day to day. One day I might be carrying out audits and performance reviews at one of the companies where I am the responsible Level 3, another day I might be carrying out a training course on site.

Q: What skills are needed?

A: Having a good knowledge of different prime customers’ specific NDT requirements. Being able to think on your feet. Being able to communicate well with different types of people who hold various positions within a company..

Q: How often do you work alone?

A: I work alone over 90% of the time I would say.

Q: Who do you collaborate with most?

A: Generally with quality managers/engineers and Level 2s at the companies we visit.

Q: What are some of the more rewarding aspects of your job?

A: Running courses and seeing students reactions when they have successfully passed their exams at the end of it.

Q: What do you find less enjoyable?

A: Generally the most common challenges that we face as Outside Agency Level 3s is when companies are not compliant with their customers’ requirements.

Q: Can you share an example of a challenging project and how you overcame it?

A: I have taken over quite a few new companies where they have previously had their own Level 3 or used a different outside agency. This can be quite challenging, as initially there can be quite a few issues to sort out to get them up to the required standard.

Q: Can you share a memorable moment or achievement from your career?

A: I recently ran a training course on site for one person and after he had gone I found a nice letter that he had left for me to say thankyou.
