Course Description

Our course covers; Principles of PAUT – beam creation, focal laws and imaging, Transducer design and selection, Instrument setup and calibration for linear ( zero degree and angle), sectorial and multi-group scans, Calibration of encoders,  Planning data acquisition including increment of data storage, Data acquisition: manual and encoded scans,  Inspection of samples and welds, Data analysis – defect detection, defect characterization and finite sizing,  Reliability of sizing.

We can provide PA training suitable for PCN/ISO 9712 Levels 2, and 3, and ASNT Level 3. Alternatively, we can provide training suitable for candidates working to an employer written practice based on SNT-TC-1A; EN4179 and NAS410.

Lavender International follows the BS EN ISO (PCN) 9712 – NDT Qualification and Certification of NDT Personnel Standard for its Level 3 programmes. Lavender International cannot provide ASNT NDT Level 3 exams but can provide advice on the exam and training in preparation for the exam and contact information for exam locations in the UK and worldwide.

Learning Overview

Depending on the Level you undertake you will cover topics such as the principles of Phased Array Testing, Testing techniques and Calibration of testing systems. You will learn about Detectability of defects, factors affecting the performance of the Phased Array test, conducting and recording the test. There is a wide range of topics covered within our course content.

What are the responsibilities of a individual who is certified to Ultrasonic PA Level 2?

An individual certified to UT PA Level 2 has demonstrated competence to perform NDT according to UT PA procedures. Within the scope of the competence defined on the certificate, Level 2 personnel may be authorised by the employer to:
  • Select the UT PA technique for the test method to be used;
  • Define the limitations of application of the testing method;
  • Translate NDT codes, standards, specifications and procedures into NDT instructions adapted to the actual working conditions;
  • Set up and verify equipment settings;
  • Perform and supervise tests;
  • Interpret and evaluate results according to applicable standards, codes, specifications or procedures;
  • Prepare UT PA written instructions
  • Carry out and supervise all tasks at or below level 2;
  • Provide guidance for personnel at or below level 2, and
  • Report the results of UT PA test

Equipment Required

All Ultrasonic Testing equipment is provided, you are expected to bring your own safety boots and overalls/lab coat as well as a scientific Calculator. We provide all training materials with the exception of Level 3 Text Books.

NOTE

If you wish to bring your own UT set this must be approved by the tutor prior to commencement of the course.

UT Set

UT Critical Sizing students must provide their own calibrated UT sets and bring the current calibration certificate with them. Probe checks must be carried out prior to attending as per PCN requirements (PCN Gen Appendix C1).

PCN Certification

Candidates MUST bring their PCN Wallet Card.


If you do not have a wallet card bring some other form of identification showing a photograph, i.e. Passport or Photo Driving Licence.

All other equipment and training materials (with the exception of Level 3 Text Books) are provided by Lavender International. Protective gloves, protective eye glasses and plastic aprons are also available for the use of students if required.
