At Lavender International, we decided it was about time you got to know some of our staff in a little bit more detail. Next up is one of our newest L3 Consultants - Tony Barron. Tony has been with Lavender for just over 18 months now and below he details what he loves about his role, what he finds more challenging, how he stays up-to-date in NDT and more.

Q: Can you describe a typical workday for you as an NDT tech?

A: On Mondays and Tuesdays, I focus on conducting audits and performance reviews to ensure everything within the client organisation is running smoothly, and that team members are aligned with company objectives.

Q: Where do you typically perform your role?

A: Generally on site. My job isn’t an office based role and I can be away overnight leaving at 5/6am.

Q: What type of equipment do you use?

A: Mainly my laptop – we basically watch people/go through checklists. Performance reviews are an essential part of ensuring the team is on the right track. My laptop allows me to record notes, track progress over time, and manage follow-up tasks efficiently.

Q: What skills are needed?

A: When managing hundreds of interactions, whether its performance evaluations or audits, the key to success is making sure that every detail is accounted for, so being organised is key.

Q: How do you stay updated?

A: I attend all trade shows and events.

Q: How often do you work alone?

A: I work alone more now I’m qualified, I’d probably say 50/50.

Q: What types of materials or structures do you most often test?

A: Generally aerospace.

Q: Which NDT methods do you use the most?

A: Magnetic Particle Testing, Penetrant Testing and Ultrasonic Testing.

Q: What are some common challenges you face during your inspections?

A: In our role, there’s a lot to consider. We have to ensure we have all the necessary resources, such as training materials, samples, and exams, at our disposal to do our jobs correctly and efficiently. The complexity of our work requires careful preparation and attention to detail, so we can meet the demands of the job and deliver the best possible outcome.

Q: Who do you collaborate with most?

A: My Outside Agency colleagues.

Q: What do you enjoy the most?

A: Visiting different companies all over the country.

Q: What do you find less enjoyable?

Q: I love my job! One of the things I enjoy the most is how things are different every week. No two days are ever the same, which keeps me on my toes and continually learning. The variety in my work makes it exciting and challenging, and I’m never bored.

Q: How do you handle unexpected issues or complications during testing?

A: I’ve learned to expect the variety and challenges that come with my job because we come across so many different scenarios every week. Over time, I’ve developed a keen sense of what to look for, but I also take a lot of guidance from the other Level 3s, who have more experience and often help steer me in the right direction.

Q: Can you share an example of a challenging project and how you overcame it?

A: Having been with the business for only a short period there hasn’t been anything yet… but I’m learning to be prepared!

Q: How has your role as an NDT technician evolved since you started?

A: I started as a Level 2, but I’ve worked hard to develop my skills, gain experience, and increase my qualifications. As a result, I’ve now moved into a Level 3 role, which comes with significantly more responsibilities and the ability to take on more complex tasks. The transition has been a rewarding experience, and it’s given me a sense of accomplishment as I continue to grow.

Q: Can you share a memorable moment or achievement from your career?

A: Passing my first Level 3 exam in dye penetrant – that was a huge jump for me – I was chuffed to bits!
