What is Magnetic Testing?

Magnetic Testing involves the magnetisation of a component, followed by the application of ferromagnetic particles. The particles align along discontinuities in the surface, or shallow sub-surface discontinuities. This method is used to test welds, castings, and forgings for surface or subsurface defects; however it can only be used on ferromagnetic metals.

What are the responsibilities of a individual who is certified to Magnetic Level 2?

An individual certified to Magnetic Level 2 has demonstrated competence to perform NDT according to Magnetic Testing procedures. Within the scope of the competence defined on the certificate, Level 2 personnel may be authorised by the employer to:

  • Select the Magnetic technique for the test method to be used;
  • Define the limitations of application of the testing method;
  • Translate NDT codes, standards, specifications and procedures into NDT instructions adapted to the actual working conditions;
  • Set up and verify equipment settings;
  • Perform and supervise tests;
  • Interpret and evaluate results according to applicable standards, codes, specifications or procedures;
  • Prepare Magnetic written instructions
  • Carry out and supervise all tasks at or below Level 2;
  • Provide guidance for personnel at or below Level 2, and
  • Report the results of Magnetic test

Magnetic Level 2 training at Lavender International covers the following:

General Theory:

  • Principles of Magnetic Particle Inspection
  • Methods of magnetisation
  • Inspection and detection of indications
  • Checks and calibrations
  • Equipment
  • Test procedures
  • Standards and specifications
  • Testing procedures
  • Detectability of defects
  • Product technology
  • Interpretation and reporting
  • Post test procedures
  • Safety precautions

Specific Theory:

Application of the method to the specific requirements of the company, in particular making reference to those codes, specifications and procedures used by the company, including the relevant control checks.

We can provide Magnetic Testing training suitable for PCN GEN  BS EN ISO 9712 Levels 1, 2, and 3, ASNT Level 3. Alternatively we can provide training suitable for candidates working to an employer written practice based on SNT-TC-1A; EN4179 and NAS410.

Examinations for Magnetic Testing are based around PCN personal certification examinations to Levels 1, 2 and 3, plus examination for employer based schemes such as SNT-TC-1A, NAS410 and EN4179.

The Magnetic Level 2 examination includes a theory paper, specific paper, and a practical exam.

The PCN requirements for Level 2 Magnetic are: 24 hours training if Level 1 is held, or 40 hours direct to level 2, previous to the exam, and 3 months supervised work experience additional to Level 1 (4 months direct), to be obtained either before the examination, or within 24 months after passing the exam.

Once the 24 additional hours training have been obtained, the examination passed, and 3 additional months supervised work experience obtained within 24 months of passing the exam, PCN will issue certification.

The options for MT Level 2 examinations are:

Initial Candidate
Resit (Theory)
Resit (Practical)
Recertification

Please Note: PCN require that an exam levy is paid at an appropriate rate.

To be eligible for the PCN Level 2 examination, an eye test must be passed (near vision and colour).

The PCN requirements for Magnetic Level 2 are: 3 months supervised work experience additional to Level 1 (4 months direct to Level 2).

Once the 24 additional hours training have been obtained, the examination passed, and 3 additional months supervised work experience obtained within 24 months of passing the exam, PCN will issue certification.

The minimum requirements for Level 2 are additional to requirements already satisfied for Level 1.  If you are wishing to go direct to Level 2, the minimum work experience is 4 months, and the minimum training is 40 hours.  Note: The examination may be taken before the work experience is completed; however certificates are not issued until proof of work experience is provided.  After passing the examination, a results notice is issued by PCN, you then have 24 months to complete the required work experience.  For employer based schemes the expected amount of work experience should be determined in the written practice.

Candidates are now able to claim 50% of the total work experience requirement by attending a Lavender accelerated work experience programme.  The programme is PCN approved and is available at our UK facilities.  Click here for more information.

What is Recertification?

Recertification is the procedure for revalidation of a certificate by examination conducted at a registered AQB.

Duration: 1 day (1/2 day refresher training & examination)
The period of validity of the certification is normally of five years from the date of certification, and the expiry date is indicated on the certificate and/or wallet card.

Since 1st January 2017, all recertification examinations must be taken at least 6 weeks prior to the expiry date.  Therefore recertification examinations should be booked at least 3 months prior to the certificate expiry date.  This is important as penalties are involved should you NOT be able to take your recertification examination prior to the 6 weeks ahead of the expiry date. Click here for further information.

Where success in the recertification procedure occurs within the 90 days prior to expiry of the certificate, the new certificate will expire five years after the expiry date of the certificate being revalidated. If the renewal or recertification procedure is completed prior to 90 days before expiry, the new certificate will be valid for five years from the completion of that renewal or recertification procedure.

It is the responsibility of the certificate holder to initiate the procedure required for renewal. The renewal application shall be presented within the six months before the date of expiration of the certification. To ensure continuity of certification, applicants are advised to ensure that their application reaches the Certification Records Office not later than 4 weeks before expiry.

In the event that a certificate has expired, for PCN holders you may apply for late renewal up to 12 months after the date of expiry (and no later) using PCN form PSL/28 obtainable from BINDT. PSL/28 may also be used by individuals who recognise in advance that, for whatever reason, they will be unable to submit their application for renewal by the expiry date, in which case they may apply on PSL/28 for deferred renewal. It is emphasized that acceptance of an application for late or deferred renewal/recertification does not extend the validity of the PCN certificate concerned.

Holders of PCN radiography certification at all levels will be required to be in possession of valid PCN basic radiation safety or radiological protection certification (or alternative national radiation safety certification where the certificate holder concerned is engaged in radiography exclusively outside of the United Kingdom) to maintain the validity of the radiography certificate.

Holders of Employer Based Schemes such as SNT-TC-1A, recertification renewals will be determined within the written practice.
